Force of Nature

Force of Nature's mission is to mobilise mindsets for climate action: they empower young people to turn their climate anxiety into agency, walk the corridors of power, and in doing so, change the institutional mindset.

What we did:

  • Big Change funded Clover Hogan as finalist in 2023 and a joint winner in our Big Education Challenge in 2024.
  • Force of Nature’s aim is to fast track young people to build their confidence, develop new skills, and get clear on the climate solutions they wish to lead.
  • Our support will enable Force of Nature to pilot training pathways to help young people upskill in public speaking, advising decision-makers, and supporting peers and teachers within schools.

The Spark

The UK education system is currently failing to teach young people about the climate crisis, and is unable to equip them to take sustained action. Eco-anxiety is rising amongst young people, with 45% saying climate-related anxiety and distress is affecting their daily lives and ability to function normally.

The research is clear: young people care deeply, yet these feelings can be paralysing when not met with clear ways to take action. And one of the biggest barriers to action is lacking the necessary skills and knowledge.

Clover Hogan struggled to have her concerns for the environment listened to at school. She founded Force of Nature to address students’ climate anxiety by creating new training pathways to help young people prepare for their roles in a green economy, build their confidence, develop their skills, and help them find the climate solutions they wish to lead.

Only when schools begin to reflect the bright curious minds within them, will they prepare young people for the future.

The impact

At the age of 19, Clover started Force of Nature with the mission to mobilise mindsets for climate action.

Big Change supported Force of Nature to develop three new training pathways to help young people not only feel empowered but also develop the knowledge and skills to take action and influence change, including gaining access to the fast-growing green economy.

Force of Nature's ambition is to fast track young people to build their confidence, develop new skills, and get clear on the climate solutions they wish to lead. Measurable mindset shifts will take place across key focus areas, including agency, efficacy and confidence.

Since starting in 2019, the Force of Nature team has grown to 13 people with a 1,250-strong global community of members aged 16 to 35. The team has delivered programmes to over 1000 students in 52 countries and reached many more by training facilitators to deliver workshops. They launched the Force of Nature podcast, which now has a total of three seasons.

Force of Nature has helped put climate anxiety on the radar of and conducted independent research alongside the Climate Psychology Alliance, Climate Cares, and the Royal College of Psychiatry (among others). Their work has been featured in the New York Times, the Guardian, the Financial Times, Global Citizen, National Geographic, among others.

Young people have inherited the climate crisis. With support from Big Change, Force of Nature is piloting training pathways to help young people upskill in public speaking, advising decision-makers, and supporting peers and teachers within schools.
