Big Change is an entrepreneurial organisation approaching our fifth birthday and with a growing team we require an experienced operational leader to ensure we are set up and working in a way that maximizes our effectiveness and potential.

Role Summary                                                                                        

We recognise that with great ambition comes the need for great people and we are looking for someone to play a key role in the leadership team at Big Change. You will be taking the lead on managing our internal operations, codifying our ways of working and exploring opportunities that set us up to scale.

You will need experience in both core operational management (legal, finance, people) and the ability to translate our vision and strategy into a road map with clear objectives and milestones. Pragmatic and with a keen eye for detail, you will enjoy finding smarter ways of working and ensuring the smooth running of the organization.


Key roles and responsibilities                                                                                  

As part of the leadership team

  • Work with Managing Director to develop and translate our vision and strategy into clear objectives supported by an operational plan;
  • Monitor and review progress against operational plan and budget, keeping us all in line.
  • Play a key role in leading the Big Change team: ensuring that everyone is engaged, motivated and knows what they are accountable for, with the support and resources needed to execute effectively.
  • Proactively identify opportunities to improve our impact and efficiency – process improvement, smarter project management, new platforms and tools;
  • Help to build and work with an external steering group of experts that guide and push both our thinking and operational effectiveness

Key Operations Management

  • Accountable for Big Change’s finances; periodically reviewing with the senior management team and ensuring we are executing against budget and forecast;
  • Manage our financial support teams (eg. bookkeeper, auditor) to execute monthly payments and ensure that robust mechanism of budget and financial planning, monitoring and control are in place;
  • Part with our lawyers on key contracts (employment, supplier, project partner);
  • Manage our internal systems (eg. Salesforce) to ensure we are using them effectively to engage and activate our community

Supporting Smart Execution Against Our Vision

  • Ensure all Big Change’s key workstreams and projects (including charitable projects and community events) are delivered on time, on budget and within scope
  • Monitor all work streams and business processes to identify gaps and implement solutions/improvements accordingly
  • Codify our ways of working so we are constantly improving the way we do things (eg Project finding process, program of support to projects, community management);
  • Work with the Community Director to ensure that all operational elements of our community events (including STRIVE) are being managed with an appropriate level of diligence.
  • Ensure that appropriate service level agreements are in place for functions that are outsourced to external organisations (eg. legal, finance, event logistics)


  • Ensuring that Big Change is compliant with all relevant charitable and commercial legislation at all times;
  • Support delivery of high quality reporting to key stakeholders;
  • Prepare quarterly managements accounts and report to trustees; ensuring that trustees are up to speed with activities and informed of potential risks.
  • Ensure that Big Change’s annual statutory accounts are prepared, completed and filed on time;
  • Work with legal support to ensure delivery of appropriate legal services across our various functions

Knowledge and experience

  • Previous experience in a similar position, ideally in the third sector. Experience in a commercial environment will also be a big plus
  • Managing a team, setting objectives and supporting their development;
  • The ability and willingness to work in a fast paced startup environment where no one day is the same
  • Strong organizational skills – ensuring that the team runs smoothly and our systems and tracking is ship shape;
  • Experience of working on community and fundraising events (from smaller, more intimate dinners) is preferred but not essential;
  • Managing multiple stakeholder groups


Skills and competencies

  • Experienced operator with broad and proven experience across a range of internal functions – likely including finance (although not necessarily qualified), governance & the reporting cycle, business planning, procurement, IT & systems;
  • Detail orientated with a strong organiser with an eye for detail and the ability to prioritise work and juggle multiple things at once;
  • Comfortable communicating with high profile stakeholders, vendors and partners;
  • Ability to identify solutions in a fast-paced environment, work autonomously and be proactive in approach;
  • IT literate and confident user of spreadsheets and databases (Salesforce and Xero a bonus)
  • A good sense of humour and fun, and willingness to jump in and help with anything and everything
