The Difference Between a Teacher and a Mentor

4 November 2014: posted by BigChange

Last week, we heard from Julie Pettifer, a Virgin Care employee who won a spot on the Haute Route Hike on the Virgin STRIVE Challenge. She gave a great piece of advice to Young People in the UK: “not to be afraid to ask for help and support, especially from an ‘older’ person they feel they can trust”. This reminded me of a great Ted Talk by Rita Pierson, pointing out the difference between a teacher who simply teaches a lesson, and a mentor who cares and sees children as unique individuals, with individual needs.

Every child deserves a champion, an adult who will never give up on them, who understands the power of connection, and insists that they become the best that they can possibly be.
