Big Change hits the road: Newcastle

5 June 2015: posted by BigChange

Today some of our Big Changers travelled to Newcastle to visit The Key – an organisation we support that helps to create opportunities for youth to unlock their unique potential.

The Key encourages young people to come up with ideas, plan how to make them happen, and then pitch them to a panel of volunteers to earn grants that will go towards their projects. It’s sort of like Dragon’s Den, but with nicer panel members.

Essie, Karl and I were lucky enough to be trained to sit on the panel, meet two groups, and understand how they had learnt the 12 Key Fund skills.

We listened to pitches from a group of film producers and an indie-rock band. The film production group was comprised of three young men who had been unemployed for over twelve months, and the band was looking for funding to support a plan to market themselves better within their community.

Impressed by the persistence and dedication of the groups, both were given the seed funding by the Key to take their projects to the next level.

With this being only my second day working for Big Change, I can already tell this won’t be a typical day job.

The work that our friends at The Key do is creating truly wonderful opportunities for young people that would otherwise not be available, and it is fostering a community of creativity, drive and initiative. It’s pretty cool to be a part of a team that is helping to make this possible.

It was indeed a successful trip, and one that reminded us of why we do what we do. It might also go down in history as the coolest second day of work ever.
